The Native Son Awards was created by Emil Wilbekin, a journalist and activist, to show how black, gay men have contributed in media, entertainment and social activism.
Mr Wilbekin said: “with the election, it’s even more important to make sure that black men, no matter what their sexual identity, are seen and heard.”
He added that this year is also the perfect year to have launched because there are more visible, black, gay men.
Mr Wilbekin told Essence: “Often, in the LGBT community, African-Americans are marginalised and overlooked…I wanted to create a safe place where we can come together.”
